The NUSO Concerto Competition 2020 is the first-ever competition of its kind at Northeastern University. Created by Evan Bennett, it celebrates the depth and diversity of musical talent across the spectrum of music at the university. The upcoming concert features Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 and takes place on Saturday, March 28 at 8pm in the Fenway Center, Northeastern University.

The MCO premiered a newly composed piano concerto by Jack DeBouter with piano soloist Gareth Cordery in November. The nearly twenty-minute work was written for the group and was greeted with marvelous reviews. It was partnered with a performance of Beethoven’s famous Symphony No. 6, “Pastoral”.

The MCO recorded the score written by Jack DeBouter to a new animated film, Estrellita, produced by Middlebury’s DLA program. Conductor Evan Bennett worked with the composer, sound engineer, and producer/director Daniel Houghton to produce the soundtrack. The film has gone on to win accolades at major film festivals across the country.

Pete Francis, former founder and lead singer for Middlebury’s own renowned indie rock band Dispatch, joined his new band with the MCO and Evan Bennett in April to celebrate composer Su Lian Tan (Fletcher Professor of the Arts, Middlebury) and her twenty-five years of influencing musicians at Middlebury. Performing the first live rendition of a new song in an arrangement by Jack Herscowitz, Francis and the orchestra opened the second half of the wide-ranging concert.
